How does one apply calligraphy in sumi-e painting? The idea seems to be puzzling especially to those who have been introduced to or taught Chinese/Japanese painting through patterns and shapes by those who don’t have the understanding that those patterns and shapes have, through the centuries been painted using the same technique/way as calligraphy (four gentlemen).

After all, calligraphy is a stylised pictograph – a picture. Many of the Oriental painting teachers have this understanding but it is on a subconscious level since calligraphic writing is part of their culture and upbringing.
